Sam Spofforth, Executive Director

Sam Spofforth has served as Executive Director of Clean Fuels Ohio since the organization’s founding in 2002. Under Spofforth’s leadership, Clean Fuels Ohio has become the “go to” resource in Ohio for cleaner fuels, vehicles and energy-saving transportation technologies that reduce pollution, increase American energy security and strengthen Ohio’s economy.  Spofforth was named the U.S. Department of Energy’s national Clean Cities Coordinator of the Year in 2007 and Midwest Clean Cities Coordinator of the Year in 2004. He is President of Transportation Energy Partners, a national non-profit that serves as an umbrella organization for many of the nation's 80+ Clean Cities coalitions and educates policy makers and others on transportation energy issues. He serves on the Ohio Environmental Education Fund Advisory Council and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman “Green Team,” among other groups. Spofforth holds a Bachelor’s degree from Hiram College and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

Charlene Brenner, Grants Coordinator

Charlene began her involvement with Clean Fuels Ohio as a volunteer in 2011 and has since joined the full time staff. Her duties primarily involve support for grant administration and assisting our many grant funders and partners. Charlene graduated from Kenyon College in 1993 with a B.A. in Political Science and also earned a J.D. from The Ohio State University in 1996.

Andrew Conley

Andrew Conley, Program Director

Andrew Conley oversees the day to day management of the Ohio Green Fleets program for Clean Fuels Ohio, working to help fleets reduce harmful vehicle emissions and petroleum dependence, helping fleets secure project funding, and designating fleets who are leaders in deploying green technologies and practices. Since he joined the Clean Fuels Ohio staff in November 2008, he has worked to develop both the public policy and Ohio Green Fleets programs for Clean Fuels Ohio. Conley previously coordinated Corps Development for City Year Columbus, where he was charged with administering programs for 38 diverse AmeriCorps members. Conley holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in History and Comparative Religious Studies from Wright State University.


Jim Csaszar

Jim Csaszar, Administration and Finance Director

Jim Csaszar is responsible for coordinating all accounting needs for CFO. Csaszar has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, including 13 years as the Controller of the Diocese of Columbus.  Csaszar holds a B.S. in Administrative Science from the Ohio State University.

Lucas DuSablon, Development Coordinator

Lucas joined the Clean Fuels Ohio staff in the summer of 2011 as a Program Assistant through CFO's Student Internship Program, assisting former Development Director Jill Herbst in her day to day efforts. He currently is responsible for implementing the overall development strategy for CFO which includes overseeing membership, outreach and fundraising efforts. A 2012 graudate of The Ohio State University, Lucas holds a B.A. in Philosophy.

Jerrold Hutton

Dr. Jerry Hutton, Director Gaseous Fuels Transportation Partnership

Dr. Jerrold L. Hutton, former member of the CFO Board of Directors, joined the Clean Fuels Ohio staff in autumn of 2011. Dr. Hutton has previous worked as the Dean of Hocking College’s Logan Ohio Campus where he was responsible for the construction of this USGBC LEED Platinum facility and management of all aspects of the Hocking College Energy Institute. From 1990 through 2003, Jerrold worked internationally for various companies as a sales engineer travelling to South America, Mexico, the Pacific Rim, and Europe. He has presented articles with such distinguished organizations as Society of Automotive Engineers, Natural Gas America, American Gas Association, BIT Bio Energy Associations, International Natural Gas Vehicle Group, the Ohio Fuel Cell Coalition, and Green Energy Ohio.  He holds a B.S. from Weber University in Automotive Engineering and Technology, a Master of Education degree from Ohio University in College Technical Education, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Capella University.

Pete Johnsen

Pete Johnsen, Administration and Finance Associate

Pete Johnsen is responsible for coordinating accounting, IT, and other administrative needs for CFO. Johnsen has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, including 12 years as a staff member with the Ohio Environmental Council and service as past Vice President for Forty Plus of Central Ohio. Johnsen currently serves on the board for EarthShare Ohio. Johnsen holds a B.A. in Geography from Miami University and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from Ohio University.

Beth Lamb, Communications and Program Manager

Beth Lamb joined the Clean Fuels Ohio team in June 2011 as a program coordinator for the Ohio Green Fleets Program. She assists with program outreach, events, and ongoing social network development. Her previous experience included work within the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Office of Communication, focusing on social network development, media relations, event planning and design work. She also worked at The Ohio State University, College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in the Office of Prospective Student Services. A 2009 graduate of The Ohio State University, Beth holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Agricultural Communication.

Cynthia Maves

Cynthia Maves, Director of Grant Administration

Cynthia Maves oversees grant administration for Clean Fuels Ohio’s $11 million U.S. Dept. of Energy grant and the $1 million U.S. EPA grant. Maves also leads project development for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Prior to joining Clean Fuels Ohio, Maves worked as a consultant for a solar energy firm and as an attorney with the State Medical Board of Ohio.  While serving as a director of a community bank in Indiana, Maves led the effort to build the first LEED-certified bank branch in Indiana. Maves serves on the board of the Friends of COSI. She graduated with a B.A. from DePauw University and a J.D. from Indiana University at Bloomington.


Megan Miller

Megan Miller, Grants Manager

Megan Miller joined the Clean Fuels Ohio team in January 2010 as a Program Coordinator for the Department of Energy Clean Cities project—the Ohio Advanced Transportation Partnership. Miller’s previous experience includes work with two non-profit environmental advocacy organizations. With the Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW), she worked on education, outreach and the development of volunteer activities aimed at keeping the Olentangy River and tributaries clean and safe. At The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), she participated in the Diesel Emission Reduction grant project. A 2009 graduate of Otterbein College, Miller holds a BA degree in Sociology, with a focus on environment and sustainability issues.
