Getting Started

Are you interested in offering E85 at your fueling station? If this is something you are considering, please see our Ethanol page to learn more about this fuel. Once you have decided to carry E85, you have the option to decide whether you want to convert your existing fueling infrastructure to be compatible with ethanol or install new equipment for E85. Existing equipment that is in good condition and is compatible with ethnaol may be used with a few modifications. Otherwise, you must install new equipment that is able to handle ethanol, an alcohol-based fuel.

IMPORTANT: Ohio State Fire Marshall E85 Fueling Equipment Policy

Despite the "delisting" of E85 fueling equipment from the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL), the Ohio State Fire Marshall provides a waiver to the requirement that all fueling equipment must be UL-certified for E85 fueling components. In other words, while all fueling equipment used for petroleum-based fuels must be "listed" by UL or some other standard-setting body, fueling equipment for E85 fuel does not have to be listed as long as the equipment manufacturer deems the components safe.

To receive the E85 waiver, the owner of an E85 fuel dispensing facility must obtain a certification from the equipment manufacturer that they believe that the equipment is “compatible with E-blend” and not a hazard to the public and compliant with fire code requirements for low blends of ethanol fuel. Also, the equipment manufacturer must have “initiated the process” to get the equipment “listed” with UL or some other standard-setting body.

The State Fire Marshall's waiver program is designed to allow current and future E85 fuel marketers to continue providing biofuels to the public while a UL E85 equipment standard is sought. Clean Fuels Ohio believes that the equipment being used to supply ethanol in Ohio is safe, and there have been no reports of any problems with recommended equipment, safety or otherwise. If you have any questions or concerns about safety, approved equipment, or the State Fire Marshall waiver, please contact Clean Fuels Ohio at info@cleanfuelsohio.org or (614) 292-5443. You may also download a .pdf version of the Ohio State Fire Marshall Code concerning the waiver.
