Lakewood, Ohio is located along the shores of Lake Erie, 10 minutes from downtown Cleveland. The city’s 5.6 square miles are composed primarily of a vintage residential community offering housing from modest single homes and apartments to homes with distinct architectural design located within a national historic district.
By partnering with Clean Fuels Ohio, the City of Lakewood was awarded funding through the US EPA’s Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative to retrofit 11 of their 90 diesel vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs). Diesel particulate filters drastically reduce emissions of ultrafine particles, black carbon, PAH pollutants, and visible smog from exhaust.
The following case study includes diesel cleanup scenarios applied to the City of Lakewood’s real-world fleet. The data used to arrive at emissions and fuel reduction figures are based on the real-world usage patterns of Lakewood’s vehicles. Lakewood’s fleet is composed of 90 diesel vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, off-road construction equipment, emergency vehicles, and refuse haulers. Additional information in the table demonstrates how deploying various cleanup strategies will score in Clean Fuels Ohio’s Ohio Green Fleets program.
