Petroleum V 2.0

This lesson serves as an introduction to learning about alternative fuels, including historical information on the use of ethanol and biodiesel. The lesson also addresses the increasing interest and importance in investigating biofuels. Questions related to this lesson can be found in the quiz generator.

Biodiesel V 2.0

In this lesson, students will learn the chemical make-up of biodiesel as well as how the biofuel is produced. The lesson also includes information on the environmental benefits of biodiesel and the useful by-products that can come from its production. Questions related to this lesson can be found in the quiz generator.

Natural Gas V 2.0

In this lesson, students will learn the origin of natural gas usage and its chemical make-up. Natural gas is among the very cleanest of fuels and students will learn about ccompressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. The lesson also includes information about how landfill waste can be used to make natural gas.

Ethanol V 2.0

This lesson includes information on what ethanol is, how it is produced, its environmental benefits, uses, availability and cost. At the end of the lesson is a lab experiment on fermentation. There are also six questions on the ethanol lesson available in the quiz generator.

Propane V 2.0

Students will learn about the chemical components of propane, often referred to as liquified petroleum gas or LPG, as well as its uses in transporation. Students will learn how the same fuel that runs their home grill can also fuel a number of everyday vehicles.

Hydrogen V 2.0

In this lesson, students will learn about the emerging technology of hydrogen energy. While this technology is still in its infancy, many experts are optimistic about moving from a "fossil fuel economy" to a "hydrogen economy" in the coming years. This lesson serves as an introduction to the state of the technology.

Idle Reduction V 2.0

This lesson discusses the problems associated with idling as well as idle reduction tactics for semi-trucks and average consumers alike. Topics include auxiliary power units (APUs), truck stop electrification (TSE) sites, and myths associated with vehicle idling. Anti-idling questions are also available in the quiz generator.

Did you miss the Alternative American Fuels workshops that were held by Clean Fuels Ohio? Although we don’t have plans to do more of these workshops, you can download most of the lessons from the Texas Railroad Commission http://www.rrc.state.tx.us/divisions/afred/education/education.html. The lessons on the website are correlated to the Texas science curriculum. Please click here (.pdf file) for correlations to Ohio’s curriculum.
