When you purchase biodiesel you will notice it is designated with a “B” followed by a number like “20”. This number represents the percentage of biodiesel used in the fuel.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), an independant consumer protection agency, has established production standards around the rating system for biodiesel, not too unlike the standards used for the octane rating for unleaded gas.
Specifically, the ASTM has established standards for B5-B20 and B100. Consumers who use these rated fuels can be certain that they are formulated to exacting standards that ensure quality and compatability with their diesel vehicles.
To ensure the standards are followed, the National Biodiesel Board created BQ-9000, a voluntary biodiesel quality management program. Producers and marketers can qualify to earn the BQ-9000 seal. To learn more about the seal, visit www.biodiesel.org.
