Autogas substantially reduces harmful emissions, costs less than gasoline and is almost entirely domestically produced. Propane, or liquefied petroleum gas, is called autogas when used as a motor fuel. It is the third most widely used vehicle fuel in the world, with over 17 million autogas-powered vehicles globally - but the U.S has more work to do.
Vehicles that run on propane autogas achieve comparable performance to gasoline-powered vehicles with approximately 85-90 percent of the miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent. As mentioned, autogas can reduce vehicle carbon emissions without sacrificing performance. Additionally, it reduces vehicle maintenance, saving costs and extending engine life. Should a rare accidental release of autogas occur, it would dissipate into the atmosphere with no harmful contaminants released into the air, soil or water-as it is nontoxic, nonpoisonous, and is insoluble in water.
The only energy council of its kind, PERC educates consumers about propane's many uses and benefits, leads safety and training efforts among propane retailers and consumers, and drives technology development to expand adoption of propane as a clean, affordable, American-made energy source. PERC programs benefit a variety of industries including fleet vehicle management, landscaping, residential and commercial building, agriculture, and material handling.
